Hi English Language Speakers and Teachers, Anglo Library Patrons and Friends
We are at the last month of the year, December 2012, and pickings are slim for English language events. But there are dinners and celebrations — you may find some of interest listed below.
December in Mexico is the high point of religious celebrations — and I don´t mean Christmas. Mexico´s spectacular devotion to Mary the mother of Jesus Christ, peaks between December 8, the Immaculate Conception, and December 12, the Guadalupe apparition. Estimates put the number of “peregrinos” (pilgrims) visiting the Guadalupe Shrine in those five days at five million, one million per day stuffed into a single city block. Some of the faithful will have bloody knees and bloody feet from walking blocks and even many miles on their knees or barefoot.
Here are two English language tours of this shrine in December:
December 1st, Saturday, 9:30 a.m. to 12noon. Cultural and Historical Tour of the Guadalupe Basilica and grounds sponsored by Alpha Delta Kappa — Society of Women Educators. INFO: misselmer@usa.net
There are many charitable dinners for the poor, the homeless and the elderly. Unfortunately most are not listed on the web. The only one for which I have data is sponsored by Ora of the American Benevolent Society. If you want to make a contribution or help out at the dinner contact her at ora-999@hotmail.com
Watch for the Salvation Army Red Kettles in your neighborhood.
As always we include all the event information which is sent to us or we find on-line. Maintenance of on-line calendars is often poor and even worse during the holidays. You should call before planning to attend any event in this season.
For these same reasons our January events newsletter will not go out until about January 10th.
My favorite hang-out on Saturdays is the Anglo Public Library. In December it is closed Saturday the 1st. and closes for the holidays December 18th until January 2nd.
Visit me on Saturdays at the Anglo Public Library. Bring your UBS memory stick for * information management tips and tricks * free e-books and free audiobooks * free and easy software
Happy holidays. Ricardo
